Above Albertville's rather humdrum town centre is the Cité Médiévale de Conflans, a lost-in-time neighbourhood on a 412m-high rocky promontory. Its steep streets and weathered walls make for an atmospheric ramble. It's 1km east from the Maison des Jeux Olympiques (across the river).

If you have private transport, consider driving the Circuit des Fortifications du Pays d'Albertville, which threads together eight forts and châteaux that date between the 13th and 18th centuries – the tourist office has details on the route.
