There are a couple of prominent Roman ruins in the centre of Aix-les-Bains, like the Arc de Campanus, a 9m-high triumphal arch. Inside the town hall is the 1st-century Roman Temple of Diana – originally dedicated to a local Celtic god. To see it, and the accompanying archaeological collection, ask about guided tours at the tourist office.
It's possible to cruise to 12th-century Cistercian Abbaye d’Hautecombe, on the other side of Lake Bourget, from Aix-les-Bains (€14, Wednesday to Monday). Ask at the tourist office.
