Visit the Lyon Musee Cinema et Miniature and enjoy its rare and exclusive collections: the cinema exhibition and the miniature scenes collection. Ideally located in the heart of “Vieux-Lyon” (the city’s historical centre), the museum is housed in the “Maison des Avocats” (Lawyers’ House), a famed 16th-century building that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the Museum and learn all you need to know about the behind-the-scenes art. The collections extend over five stories, totaling almost 2000 square meters of exhibition space.
The innovative concept of this unique collection, unparalleled in Europe, is to pay homage to the skill and know-how of behind-the-scenes artists from some of most prestigious film studios and companies. Futuristic cities, miniature planets, spaceships, airplanes, explosions, disasters… all these amazing tricks are revealed and explained. The 1000 square meters film exhibition encompasses many celebrated 200 films ("Gremlins", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "Alien", "Batman", "Robocop" and "Spiderman") from the Sixties to the current blockbusters. The cinema exhibition focuses on special effects techniques before the “all digital”, featuring original film props and artifacts, and uncovering the magic behind the greatest film studios. Film sets, costumes, models, masks, prosthetic make-up, fake animals, robots, monsters and aliens of all kinds…, altogether over 450 props and objects that were used on set or during production. You will observe real artists working on new miniatures or restoring a film props. The subtle lighting arrangement, the painstaking replication of old textures, the use of the same original materials, all contribute to the creation of a moving poetry that resonates with each new miniature panorama. Several rooms are devoted to arts and crafts in miniature, highlighted in a 1000-piece collection.Enter the Dan Ohlmann collection, a master miniaturist, and Museum curator and observe all the hyperreal miniature scenes, a result of over 25 years of passionate creation in his workshop. A Zen temple discovered in Japan, a Lyons weaving shop… all his miniatures are based on hundreds of photographs and measurements that are taken at the real location. The Salle des Performances (Performance Room) houses some of the most elaborate and delicate pieces. One of the visit's highlight is the monumental “Alien Queen” from movie “Alien vs Predator.” The pieces are either acquired after their use on set, or in the special effects workshop directly. Another highlight of the Museum is to observe the artists workshop at the end of the visit. Windows allow visitors to observe artists at work on new miniatures or restoring a film props. Thanks to this policy of restoring film artifacts, the exhibition is in constant evolution, and visitors can experience new emotions every time. In this regard, the Musee Miniature et Cinema plays a significant role in preserving film heritage.
