Skiing, snowboarding and other snow sports are the big draw in winter, while summer brings horse riding and mountain biking. The Yllästunturi Visitor Centre can advise on activities, as can hotels.
In summer Ylläs is popular with mountain bikers, and you can take your bike up in the gondola lift to the top of the downhill trails (430m vertical descent). Sport Shop rents out bikes.
There are excellent hiking possibilities in this underrated area. Check the Pallas-Yllästunturi pages on www.nationalparks.fi for a list. A couple of long-distance treks head to Olos or Levi (54km and 50km); there are several shorter trails, including the 12km Kiirunankieppi (Ptarmigan Trail) from the Yllästunturi visitor centre. Longer routes lead all the way to Pallastunturi (72km) and on to Hetta.
