Worth a Trip: Lemi

The tiny village of Lemi, 25km west of Lappeenranta, is synonymous with its signature dish lemin särä (roast mutton). Hailed as one of the seven wonders of Finland, it's cooked in a birch trough to infuse the meat with a sweet, woody flavour. Preparation takes nine hours, so you'll need to book at least two days in advance.

The best place to sample it is the lakeshore restaurant Säräpirtti Kippurasarvi, which serves nothing but lemin särä (the recipe for which dates back a thousand years), accompanied by fruit soup, flatbread and homemade kalja (beer).
