Checking flights...

Savonlinna Airport is 14km north of town, and is predominantly used by charter flights. Finnair flies here during the opera season.

Boats connect Savonlinna's passenger harbour with many lakeside towns; check for seasonal schedules. The M/S Puijo, operated by Saimaan Laivamatkat Oy, cruises between Savonlinna and both Kuopio and Lappeenranta in summer.

Savonlinna is not on major bus routes, but buses link the bus station with Helsinki (€32, 4¾ to 6½ hours, up to nine daily), Mikkeli (from €22, 1½ hours, up to 14 daily) and Jyväskylä (from €32, 3½ hours, up to eight daily).

Punkaharju (€2.70, 30 minutes, at least four daily) is one of the few destinations that can be accessed via a direct service from Savonlinna. To get to Helsinki (from €41, 4¼ hours, up to four daily) and Joensuu (€25, 2¼ hours, up to four daily), you'll need to change in Parikkala. The train station is in the town centre near the kauppatori. Buy your ticket at the machines – there's no ticket office.
