Saariselkä bristles with things to do year-round. Things are most active in winter, with numerous snowy excursions, such as husky- and reindeer-sledding, snowmobiling and ice-fishing trips, organised by the many companies in town.

Summer options include visiting the gold-panning settlement of Tankavaara, reindeer farms, canoeing, fishing, white-water rafting and various guided walks.

Prices in Saariselkä’s hotels are highest during the ski season and ruska (autumn-leaves season; late August to mid-September). Many rural cabins and cottages are available for rent. Ask at the Kiehinen nature centre, or browse the Lomarengas website. Accommodation service Saariselän Keskusvaraamo can book a wide range of cabins, cottages and apartments in and around the village.

Most restaurants close in summer, but hotels usually keep one open. There are several supermarkets where hikers and self-caterers can pick up provisions.

Drinking & Nightlife

The welcoming Saariselkä Inn has an on-site brewery. At gold-panning settlement Tankavaara, the Wild West Saloon attached to Wanha Waskoolimies is another great place for a drink.
