Rovaniemi’s airport, 8km northeast of the city, is the ‘official airport of Santa Claus’ (he must hangar his sleigh here) and a major winter destination for charter flights. Finnair and Norwegian have several flights daily to/from Helsinki. There are car-hire desks, cafes, ATMs, moneychangers, a children's playground and a Santa Claus Post Office outpost.
Airport minibuses meet arriving flights, dropping off at hotels in the town centre (€7, 15 minutes). They pick up along the same route about an hour before departures.
A taxi to the city centre costs €20 to €30 depending on the time of day and number of passengers.
Express buses go south from the bus station to Kemi (€22, 1½ hours, up to six daily) and Oulu (€24, 3½ hours, up to eight daily). Night buses serve Helsinki (€83.90, 12¾ hours, up to four daily). Daily connections serve just about everywhere else in Lapland. Some buses continue north into Norway.
One direct train per day runs from Rovaniemi to Helsinki (€80, eight hours), with two more requiring a change in Oulu (€14, 2¼ hours).
There’s one train daily northeast to Kemijärvi (€11, one hour).
