Ekenäs' enchanting Gamla Stan (Old Town) is filled with 18th-century wooden buildings named after types of fish – a legacy of the area’s fishing-village beginnings. The Gamla Stan still exhibits its origins as an artisan trade centre: its narrow streets bear the names of their industries, such as Hattmakaregatan (Hatters’ St) and Linvävaregatan (Linen Weavers’ St). Today most of the Old Town is residential, giving it an air of authenticity.
