Catching live music – from metal to opera – is a highlight of visiting Helsinki. The latest events are publicised in the free Helsinki This Week (http://helsinkithisweek.com). Tickets for big events can be purchased from Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.fi), Lippupiste (www.lippu.fi), LiveNation (www.livenation.fi) and Tiketti (www.tiketti.fi), which also has a booking office in Kamppi.

Cinema

Cinemas throughout the city show original-version films with Finnish and Swedish subtitles.

Blockbuster new releases are screened at branches of Finnkino (www.finnkino.fi), including Tennispalatsi. Art-house cinemas include the art deco Orion Theatre.

Live Music

Major touring bands gig at Hartwall Arena; venues such as cultural centre Kaapelitehdas also attract big names.

Sport

Between September and April, ice hockey reigns supreme; going to a game is a fantastic Helsinki experience. The world championships in May are avidly watched on big screens.

The football (soccer) season runs from April to October; Helsinki's successful local team HJK (Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi) has a passionate following.

Theatre

Most theatre productions are in Finnish. The Finnish National Theatre, Kansallisteatteri, is based in a beautiful National Romantic art nouveau building.
