To & From the Airport
From Matei airport expect to pay about $30 to Waiyevo, and $90 to Vuna (about one hour) in a taxi. Most upmarket resorts provide transfers for guests.
Pacific Transport has a depot in Naqara, opposite the Taveuni Central Indian School. Buses start at the depot and travel north to Matei and beyond to Lavena in the southeast, as well as south to Navakawau, just past Vuna. They run three times per day Mondays to Saturdays, and once on Sundays.
You can find a schedule here: www.taveuni.com.au/services/bus.htm. Be aware that times can and do change; buses may show up early or an hour late. Double-check the time of the return bus when you board, just to make sure there is one.
Give Budget Rent a Car a call, though keep in mind the roads here can be really rough. Locals are often willing to hire out their cars for around $130 per day. This of course means that there is no rental agreement and you will not be insured.
It’s easy to find taxis in the Matei, Waiyevo and Naqara areas, though on Sunday you might have to call one in advance. Hiring a taxi for a negotiated fee and touring most of the island’s highlights in a day will work out cheaper than hiring a car. You should be able to get one from around $140 for the day, depending on how far you want to go. For destinations such as Lavena you can go one way by bus and have a taxi pick you up at the end at a designated time: arrange this before you go.
Alternatively, your accommodation will be able to procure a private driver for you.
