Welcome to Nausori

The town developed around the CSR sugar mill that operated here for eight decades between 1881 and 1959, when everyone realised that the canes actually grew better on the drier western side. Recent experiments to grow and mill rice on a large scale also proved futile, though a new rice mill was opened in 2011 for local use.

There are many eroded 18th-century and earlier ring-ditch fortifications in the Rewa Delta. About 10m wide with steep, battered sides and a strong fence on the inner bank, they were necessary for the survival of a village in times of war, protecting it against a surprise attack.
