8.8 out of 10

Matava is a social, active and impeccably run place. Anything you want to do, from diving to sportfishing, birding or hiking, the team here can set you up. Meanwhile, stay in spacious and clean hard-wood bure (wood-and-straw hut) with heaps of windows to maximise the views (there are both garden and hillside options) and good solid beds.

The resort runs on solar power, has a large organic garden and employs strict recycling policies. Fantastic meals, using vegetables and herbs from the organic garden, are eaten communally in the big restaurant-bar bure, which is beautifully lit by lanterns in the evening. There's no beach to speak of, but there are suitable spots a short kayak away and there is plenty of space to lounge on ample decks or in the grassy grounds. A reef links Matava to Waya, a picturesque offshore island, which makes for a great snorkelling or kayaking trip – or it’s a short walk to the village and its magnificent waterfall where local kids try to impress with their high-diving skills.

Quick description via

Matava Resort offers eco-friendly accommodation providing privacy, comfort and ocean views out over the Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef. Breakfast and return boat transfers from Kadavu Island Airport are included. Built in the traditional thatched Fijian style, the bungalows at Matava are nestled in the rainforest with solid mahogany timber floors. The louvre windows and private deck offer stunning ocean views. Guest facilities include a bar, library and hand-wash laundry facilities. The resort also has a dive centre, providing access to the colourful corals and wonderful marine life of The Great Astrolabe Reef. Matava is located on the island of Kadavu, one of Fiji’s few remaining undeveloped islands. It is Fiji’s fourth largest island, situated 100 km south of the main island, Viti Levu.
