Southern Ethiopia in detail

Getting Around

All three routes into the south are almost completely paved (the pavement ends in Jinka) and in generally good condition, as are the Butajira–Ziway, Shashemene–Sodo and Sashemene–Goba roads. The road between Turmi and Omorate has also been recently asphalted, and the road between Konso and Yabelo is being upgraded. Most other roads are seriously rough and can be problematic during rain.

Daily buses and minibuses cover most major routes including most in the Lower Omo Valley. Jinka to Turmi, served only on market days, is the notable exception, though trucks may fill the gap. Most people visiting isolated areas hire 4WDs from tour operators in Addis Ababa, although they can also be rented in Arba Minch and Jinka.
