The spectrum of prices and quality of goods for sale in the Ethiopian capital is vast. You’ll find most of the cheap souvenir stalls along or around Churchill Ave and in Piazza – haggling is always recommended.
Designer Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu set up soleRebels Footwear as a way of helping the unemployed but tremendously talented artisans in her Addis neighbourhood. Just eight years later, soleRebels is one of Ethiopia’s best-known companies internationally and the world’s first shoe company to have been certified by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). All its shoes are made using locally sourced natural fibres, handmade fabric and, for soles, old car and truck tyres, and staff are paid up to four times the average wage in Ethiopia.
SoleRebels shoes are available in around 55 countries, including a flagship shop in Addis Ababa.
