Addis Ababa in detail

The free publication What’s Out! and the website Addis All Around ( highlight upcoming events on the city's entertainment scene. What’s Out! is available (haphazardly) at large hotels, smart restaurants, art galleries and the Tourist Information Centre.

Cinema is more popular than ever in Addis Ababa – even pushing theatre out of most theatres. Most films are in English or have English subtitles (some have both!).

There is no more atmospheric place than the imposing National Theatre to catch a film. Hollywood showings are normally fairly old.

Traditional Music, Dance & Theatre

Music and dance are perhaps the most accessible entry points into traditional Ethiopian culture, with restaurants putting on shows in the evenings – try Yod Abyssinia or Habesha 2000.

An azmari bet is also atmospheric places to catch both music and dance. What in the world is an azmari bet? It’s a place where interactive live performances take place by a performer similar to a minstrel who improvises amusing song and poetry.
