Welcome to Abiata-Shala Lakes National Park

Abiata is shrinking dramatically as water is diverted to irrigation projects and a soda-ash factory. The increased salinity has killed off the fish and forced most birds to go elsewhere to feed. The land has suffered along with the lake, and this is now a national park in name and decree only. Illegal settlers have invaded nearly its entirety, turning the thick woodland into charcoal and replacing much of it with villages and farm fields. Despite the destruction, a short visit remains enjoyable.
