Pubs are the epicentre of village life across Yorkshire and are among the most appealing and memorable aspects of visiting this region. Yorkshire has an illustrious brewing heritage and many of Britain's big real-ale brands were born, and continue to be produced, here. In recent years, the hop-driven craft-beer scene has boomed and there are dozens of microbreweries and taprooms to explore, both in the big cities and smaller towns.
Yorkshire's Craft Beer Innovators
Roll up, roll up, hop heads. Yorkshire has been one of the UK's most prolific beer producers for centuries, but recently the region's frothy passion for real ale has been channelled into a new breed of craft breweries influenced by America's hop-driven IPAs. These breweries mash up tradition with progressive production methods and unusual ingredients, making Yorkshire one of the best places in the country to tour craft breweries. Some of the best:
Northern Monk In a central Leeds regeneration area. Lively Grade II-listed taproom with rotating kitchen residencies and lots of local collaborations. Eternal is its signature session IPA.
North Brewing Co A Leeds craft beer bar that decided to do its own thing, which opens its expanding taproom in the brewing plant on Fridays and Saturdays; order a takeaway to eat in with a pint of Sputnik, its classic pale ale.
Magic Rock In studenty Huddersfield but worth the train ride from Leeds or Manchester. Excellent tours and exposed-brick taproom, with street food trucks for sustenance Friday to Sunday. Its signature beer is Cannonball IPA, a 7.4% ABV hop bomb.
Vocation Brewery A Victorian gothic building by Hebden Bridge's canal is the setting for this sleek taproom and taqueria with great beer. Try its American-style Life & Death IPA – a 'fruit salad' with a malty soul – with slow-roasted Yorkshire short-rib tacos.
Brass Castle Excellent unfiltered vegan and gluten-free beers that go against the grain in the handsome foodie market town of Malton. Its small comfy taproom has a retro feel; try the Bad Kitty vanilla porter with a vegan pizza.
Brew York An old hanger within York's medieval city walls houses this progressive taproom, with tables overlooking the brewing plant. Its Tonkoko milk stout is sold as 'Bounty in a glass'.
Craft brewery tours with Brewtown (departing from Leeds or York), include some of these breweries in its roster, depending on which day you sign up for.
