Winchcombe makes a superb base for walkers. Long-distance trails branch out in every direction, including the 102-mile Cotswold Way, the Gloucestershire Way (which tracks 100 miles from Chepstow to Tewkesbury) and the 55-mile, Worcestershire-bound St Kenelm’s Way.

Plenty of shorter walks also set off from Winchcombe, such as a 5.5-mile loop trail that takes in Belas Knap Long Barrow and Sudeley Castle.

Winchcombe Welcomes Walkers (www.winchcombewelcomeswalkers.com) has good walking information, along with downloadable itineraries and maps, and organises the three-day Winchcombe Cotswold Walking Festival in mid-May.
