Royal William Yard

In the 1840s this imposing complex of waterfront warehouses supplied stores for countless Royal Navy vessels. Today it’s home to sleek apartments, a clutch of galleries and shops, and a cluster of restaurants and bars, including the excellent social enterprise bakery, Column Bakehouse and the elegant Vignoble wine bar.

It's an atmospheric spot; roaming past a former slaughterhouse, bakery, brewery and cooperage underlines just how big the supplies operation was.

The yard is 2 miles west of the city centre. Hop on bus 34 (£1.30, nine minutes, half-hourly) or, better still, catch the hourly ferry. A 10-minute walk north of the yard, the Cremyll Ferry chugs across the Tamar to Cornwall, to the coast walks of the Mount Edgcumbe estate.
