Medellin to Salento via the UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape

You will start your day by travelling towards a region of the country that is under protection by UNESCO and is described as the most representative symbol of Colombian culture. You will begin the tour in the town Aguadas then continue onto Salamina via a route surrounded by spectacular landscape.  Aguadas is a town centred around coffee production and offers an authentic view of a typical ‘campesino’ (countryside) village, showcasing local craftsmen, coffee traders and ‘Arrieros’. It was declared a national monument in 1982.Aguadas is famous for utilising the Iraca palm fibre which local craftsmen have used to hand weave clothing for almost 160 years. The aguadeño hat is of particular significance as it has been recognised nationally and internationally for its high quality and representative symbol of clothing in Colombia.  Mount Monserrate. At 2270 meters above sea level (7500 feet) this viewpoint offers one of the most breath-taking panoramic views of the Andes mountain range in Colombia.  Salamina, also known as the ‘Cuidad de Luz’ (The City of Light) for its role in the development of Colombian arts and culture, was previously the capital city of the coffee region and was the first town in Colombia to cultivate the coffee bean. Wealthy landowners who made fortunes from the export of coffee wanted to show off their wealth and invested in lavish houses which you will find lining the streets of the town. UNESCO has protected Salamina as a site of world heritage for its distinctive architecture built during the Spanish colonization of the region.
