Queen’s Larder

Pub in The West End

In a lovely square southeast of Russell Sq is this cosy pub, so called because Queen Charlotte, wife of ‘Mad’ King George III, rented part of the pub’s cellar to store special foods for her husband while he was being treated nearby for what is now believed to have been the genetic disease porphyria. There are benches outside and a dining room upstairs.

American poet Sylvia Plath married Ted Hughes on Bloomsday (16 June) 1956 in the Church of St George the Martyr, Holborn, just opposite.
