Prospect of Whitby

Pub in East London

Once known as the Devil’s Tavern due to its unsavoury clientele, the Prospect first opened its doors in 1520, although the only part of the original pub remaining is the flagstone floor. Famous patrons have included Charles Dickens and Samuel Pepys. There’s a smallish terrace overlooking the Thames, a restaurant upstairs, open fires in winter and a pewter-topped bar.
