For its blissful bucolic setting and historic charm, there’s no beating the thatched, 16-century Falkland Arms, in the picture-postcard village of Great Tew, 6 miles east of Chipping Norton. The half-dozen freshly restored and upgraded rooms are great value, the pub downstairs serves fine ales and decent pub grub (mains £13 to £20), and there’s lovely walking in every direction.
