For a short circular walk, catch the Higher Ferry from Dartmouth to the east bank, stroll a mile downriver to Kingswear, then catch the Lower Ferry back. Or hike the Dart Valley Trail to Dittisham (5 miles) and cross the river to Greenway on the Dittisham–Greenway Ferry, then walk down to Kingswear before crossing back to Dartmouth by ferry.

Beautiful when viewed from its banks, Dartmouth is even more beguiling from the water. A number of vessels ply the waters. The Greenway Ferry goes to Agatha Christie’s summer house, Greenway, while the Dartmouth–Dittisham Ferry runs to the pretty village of Dittisham. The Dartmouth Steam Railway & Riverboat Company also operates river trips.

Alternatively, hire your own tub from Dartmouth Boat Hire or hop on a regular ferry – car and passenger vessels regularly shuttle between Dartmouth and Kingswear, on the opposite bank, and to Dartmouth Castle.
