Godiva Festival

Cultural in Coventry

With its roots in the legend of Coventry's Lady Godiva, this three-day festival at War Memorial Park features headlining and emerging musicians and a 'battle of the bands' competition. There are history and conservation tents, a funfair, and activities for kids.

According to the legend, Lady Godiva, cloaked by only her long hair, rode naked through Coventry in the 11th century to protest against taxes imposed by her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, having instructed the town's residents to shut their windows and stay inside. Only one disobeyed, a tailor named Thomas, giving rise to the term 'peeping Tom'.
