Welcome to Charlestown
As picturesque ports go, Charlestown sits pretty near the top. Set around a massive granite quay, and backed by Georgian buildings, it's the kind of place that almost looks like Long John Silver might stumble out from a pub at any moment. In previous centuries most of the china clay from the St Austell quarries was shipped out from Charlestown, but it’s now a favourite location for film crews; numerous blockbusters and costume dramas have used its quayside as a backdrop, including Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and the BBC's crackerjack adaptation of Poldark.
No doubt spurred by all the blockbuster interest, the old port has recently opened itself up to visitors for the first time.
