Sights

In few places are heritage and arts sights delivered with such creativity and impact as in central Bristol. At the SS Great Britain and M Shed, both on the neighbourhood's southern edge, you'll find history you can touch, smell, ride on and climb. Allow at least a day for the two.

The area also contains two Banksy art works, the Girl With A Pierced Eardrum and the Grim Reaper. Track them down then hunt out two more: the Castles Stencil and Well Hung Lover, dropping by the high-tech, interactive exhibits of We The Curious en route.

The Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is slightly to the northeast.

Sleeping

The centre of Bristol has a superb selection of places to sleep across all price brackets. From a hip hostel on a boat, via a B&B with rooftop Airstream trailers, to some supremely smart hotels, there's something for all budgets, often in places with real style.

Eating

Central Bristol is great for everything from quality cuisine to cheap eats, but cafes and places serving good value, good quality food are especially well represented.

Two areas provide particularly good, low-cost grazing grounds: the street food stalls of St Nicholas Market, and the ranks of tiny eateries stacked into the converted shipping containers at Cargo.

Drinking & Nightlife

Vibrant by day, central Bristol's harbourside area becomes even livelier by night. Big bars line waterfront Canon's Rd, with another sizeable concentration of watering holes clustered towards the north of Welsh Back. Pubs and bars dot the rest of the waterfront – the Grove and the area around Cargo are good places to start.

Shopping

With the big-brands of the Broadmead and Cabot Circus shopping centres sitting slightly to the east of the neighbourhood, the old city centre has retained a fair number of independent stores.

Heading up Christmas Steps onto Colston St reveals a scattering of specialist, craft and vintage shops, while St Nicholas Market is a central spot for a browse.

Corn St is home to a farmers market each Wednesday morning and a flea market every Saturday.
