Birmingham Airport, 8 miles east of the city centre, has direct flights to destinations around the UK and Europe, as well as direct long-haul routes to Dubai, India and the USA.
Fast and convenient trains run regularly between Birmingham New St and Birmingham International stations (£3.80, 15 minutes, every 10 minutes). Birmingham International is linked to the terminal by the Air-Rail Link monorail (free, two minutes, frequent), which runs from 3.30am to 12.30am.
Alternatively, take bus X1 (£2.40, 35 minutes, up to two hourly) from Moor St Queensway, which run 24 hours.
A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs about £45.
Most intercity buses run from Birmingham Coach Station, but the X20 to Stratford-upon-Avon (£5.50, 1½ hours, hourly) also leaves from a more convenient stop on Carr's Lane, opposite Moor St station.
National Express coaches link Birmingham with major cities across the country, including the following:
London Victoria £4.70 to £13.80, 3¼ hours, hourly or better
Manchester £3 to £15, three hours, hourly
Oxford £6 to £25, 2¼ hours, eight daily
Car & Motorcycle
During central Birmingham's ongoing construction, traffic into and around the city is severely disrupted and parking is limited. Check with your accommodation about access (don't rely on your satnav, or assume hotels' car parks are operational). Updated details of road closures are posted at www.visitbirmingham.com/travel/latest-travel-updates.
Most long-distance trains leave from Birmingham New St station, but Chiltern Railways runs to London Marylebone (£54, two hours, hourly) from Birmingham Snow Hill, and London Midland runs to Stratford-upon-Avon (£8.30, 50 minutes, half-hourly) from Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham Moor St stations.
Construction on the High Speed Rail (HS2) line – connecting London with Birmingham in just 40 minutes – is set to commence in 2019 and to be completed by 2026.
