Tour description provided by Viator

Just 300 years ago, Mayfair was no more than a muddy field.  This walk charts its progress from its early days as a playground for the aristocracy to today's comfortable mix of luxurious mansions, exclusive shops and enchanting parks and squares.  As you wander along some of London's most fashionable streets, passing houses occupied by Royalty and the aristocracy, you can marvel at the architecture and be amazed at the beautiful glass and china on display in one of Mayfair's most celebrated shops dating back to the mid-1800s.  Discover how Mayfair used to be one of London's most notorious red light districts and find out its sordid secrets.  This tour tells tales of Mayfair's highs and lows, of the characters who called it home and of the celebrities whose antics are enough to light up any tour.
Join Sandy for a fascinating walking tour of Mayfair starting in the centre of Berkeley Square beside the pump house.  On leaving the square, we walk along a street where weekly rentals exceed £4000 before turning into one of Mayfair's most exclusive shopping streets.  We can imagine what life might be like if money was no object by popping in to admire the wonderful china and glass on display in a shop dating back to the mid 1800s.  Our tour will take us past the grand houses lived in by the aristocracy of old which sit side by side with the cute mews properties that their servants and stable lads called home.  We will see the oldest trees in London as we meander through beautiful gardens, an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of the centre of London.  Mayfair is the poshest part of London but this tour will show how that has not always been the case.  You will learn the stages of Mayfair's development, from the highs of being the playground to the aristocracy for 150 years to the lows of being London's red light district where high class prostitutes plied their trade.  This is an area of contrasts where wealth and sleaze have lived side by side for centuries.  This tour enables you to see behind the scenes of one of London's most prestigious neighbourhoods and as we explore its hidden corners, you will be entertained with tales of excess and debauchery, deception and wickedness.
