Cairo in

Two Days

Start with the magnificent Egyptian Museum, followed by Egyptian street food done right at Abu Tarek. Hop on the metro to Coptic Cairo to marvel at the wonders of the Coptic Museum and the area's clutch of churches, and then head to Manial Palace for a glimpse of the long-gone lifestyle of royalty amid the ornate salons. On day two make an early start for the Pyramids of Giza. Afterwards dive into Islamic Cairo. Head to the Museum of Islamic Art first, then stroll via Bab Zuweila along Sharia Al Muizz Li Din Allah, lined by glorious monuments. Put your haggling hat on for Khan Al Khalili, then rest up amid the vintage interior of Fishawi's.

Four Days

With two more days, further explore Islamic Cairo's maze. Don't miss walking from the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan to the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, taking in the gorgeous dervish theatre of the Museo Mevlevi and the Gayer-Anderson Museum's restored finery along the way. Head to the Citadel for city views and the domed extravagance of the Mosque of Mohammed Ali before leaving the old medieval city's chaos behind, heading Nileside to stroll Garden City's looping lanes or heading out on the mighty river itself for a sunset felucca ride.
