Alexandria’s cultural life has never really recovered from the exodus of Europeans and Jews in the 1940s and '50s, but in recent years things have started to change for the better. Since the opening of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which hosts major music festivals, international concerts and performances, the town is again competing with Cairo as Egypt's cultural capital.
Checking the Cultural Calendar
The free monthly booklet Alex Agenda, available at some hotels, is extremely useful for its extensive list of concerts, theatre events and live gigs throughout Alexandria.
Check the website of Bibliotheca Alexandrina to see what's happening at the city's most important cultural venue while you're in town. Teatro Eskandariya is very active too; check its Facebook page for the current schedule of events.
