To visit the lake and various archaeological sites, you can hire a taxi for between LE300 and LE400 for the day, in which time you could feasibly visit Karanis, Lake Qarun, the pyramids and Wadi Rayyan.
If you want to spend more time in the desert or visit Wadi Al Hittan and Medinat Madi, you’ll need a 4WD. All of the lodges in Tunis and lakeside can help organise trips.
Microbuses connect most of the smaller villages with Medinat Al Fayoum – you can get to Shakshouk, the closest settlement to the hotels on Lake Qarun, for LE2. To reach Qasr Qarun or Tunis, head to Abshaway (LE2) where you can hire a microbus (as a private fare), taxi or tuk-tuk driver to take you further on.
