Quilotoa Lagoon and Indian Markets in One Day from Quito

Quilotoa, an emerald colored lake located inside a volcano crater, is one of the Andes’ gems. At 3800m, the lake is also a host to surrounding indigenous communities. The drive to Quilotoa passes through the Zumbahua canyon and various indigenous towns and farmlands. Depending on the day, we will visit either the Saquisilí (Thursdays), or Pujilí (Sundays) indigenous markets so you can appreciate the contrast between these and those of the Imbabura province (Otavalo). We then arrive at the Quilotoa National Park and begin our descent to the lake, you can hike back up or rent a mule to take you back up. After lunch we will visit Shalala, a community well known for their handicrafts. Weather in Quilotoa is very unpredictable, so we recommend being prepared with warm and waterproof clothing (layers always help).Itinerary • Pick up at 7am in the New Town (Magic Bean Cafe) • Pick up at 7:15am in the Old Town (Plaza San Blas) • Leave towards Saquisili / Pujili / Indian markets (it depends on the day) • Arrive to Quilotoa followed by trek around the crater • Lunch • Arrive to Tigua community • Return towards Quito

Overnight Tour to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa from Quito

Day 1: Cotopaxi (B,L)Begin at the meeting point in Quito, where you’ll board a vehicle destined for the Cotopaxi National Park. Absorb spectacular viewsof the Andean landscape and Avenida de los Volcanes.On arrival in the national park, you’ll hike to the summit of Cotopaxi Volcano, which forms part of the Pacific RIng of Fire.Depending on weather conditions, you’ll hike to the volcano’s 14,763-foot (4,500-meter) summit. After a safety briefing, you’ll commence a downhill descent on mountain bikes. There are two sections of the mountain biking, the first is recommend for experienced riders and the second for standard riders. The journey finishes at the beautiful lagoon at the base of Cotopaxi.The day concludes with drop-off at Hacienda Papagayo, where you will spend the night.Day 2: Quilotoa Lagoon (B,L)This full day cultural tour begins with a visit to a local indigenous market, “Saquisili” (Thursdays) or the “Pujili”market (Sundays). Most of the inhabitants of Pujili are indigenous and the best time to see native customs and clothing are the market days: Wednesdays and Sundays. Men and women from surrounding villages will pack up their llamas and donkeys early in the morning in order to come to the market and sell their extra produce for whatever money they can make.The trip through the villages of the area provide a fantastic chance to see one of the most authentic parts of the country. Before lunch we visit a local indigenous home where you have the opportunity to interact with the locals. Then we will visit the community of Tigua, a well-known place for its handicrafts. From here we will continue our trip towards the volcano Quilotoa.The drive to Laguna Quilotoa, an amazing emerald lagoon inside a volcano crater at the height of approximately 3,800m, displays a beautiful view of the Andean mountains, passing the ancient canyon of Zumbahua and many indigenous towns and farmlands. Then we will walk 2-hour round the crater rim or hiking down the crater. Return option from the lake to the Rim by mule (Optional) Arrival in Quito at approximately 6:30pm.

Private Quilotoa Lagoon Tour from Quito

Quilotoa Information:The popularity of the Quilotoa is due to the beauty of its places and the spectacle of calm waters. In the community of Quilotoa, also known as the "Summit Route" and accessible by bus from the town of Zumbahua, visitors can do ecotourism and adventure tourism with a high dose of adrenaline or simply contemplate the nearby landscapes .Even this place is close to what many researchers assume as the last dwelling of the Inca Atahualpa, so this was the last sacred route of the Incas. Visiting Quilotoa is an amazing experience approximately 4 thousand meters above sea level.On a nice hike down to the lagoon of about 30 minutes we will reach the bank of the lagoon. The ascent back to the top takes more time, but you have the possibility to rent donkeys or horses down at the lagoon. On the top we will enjoy the beautiful countryside. The stunning landscapes are a must for photography lovers.Before heading back to Quito admire the emerald green lagoon! If you are lucky, also mammals such as deer, wolves, rabbits, foxes and others can be seen.

Day 1: We start our tour from Quito early in the morning. The first day we will drive to Quilotoa Crater Lake but on the way we will have some stops. Depending of the day of departure we will stop at one of the traditional indigenous markets. This can be in Pujilí or Zumbahua that operate once a week and where the locals from the area congregate to sell their products. Another stop Tigua village and their famous painters who have achieved a prestigious name for painting indigenous traditions and Andean landscapes on goatskin. One stop more will be in the Toachi canyons before we continue to Quilotoa. This is our destination, where it will be possible to hike part of the edge of the crater or hike down to the lake (this hike is demanding but it is possible to hire a mule for the return climb.  (This cost is not included). We will have lunch at one of the locally own restaurants in the area and will move to Baños. On the way we will stop to try traditional ice-creams elaborated in the area. Our final destination this first day is a little town called “Baños” one of the most popular and interesting towns on the way to the Amazon Rainforest.Day 2: We have breakfast at the hotel and we will move east to visit the amazing route of the waterfalls where we have the chance to have a little ride on a gondola crossing the big Pastaza River to get a close view of one of the waterfalls called “Manto de la novia”. We will also visit another waterfall called “Pailon Del Diablo” or Devil’s cauldron in English. To get here we will have a hike along a forest path for around 45 minutes. We will return to Baños for lunch. In the afternoon we will go swinging on the swing at the end of the world and visit the town. The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to explore the area.Day 3: This third day we will start our return to Quito. On the way we will visit the Salasacas indigenous group and their textile shops located in the main square of this town. We will continue to “Cotopaxi Volcano and National Park”, a volcano of 5.897-m-high considered the highest active volcano in the world. This is an impressive sight to see if weather conditions are in our favor. During our stay at the National Park we will admire its natural environment, its Flora and Fauna with the explanations provided by your naturalist guide. We have a hike around Limpiopungo Lake which is located at the foot of the volcano and another one by the edge of a cliff watching the native vegetation . We will have lunch in the area of Cotopaxi and will return to Quito afterwards.

Quilotoa Lake full day from Quito

Early morning, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel to take you by mini Van or 4wd car to the Quilotoa lagoon. Depending on the day of the week, the first stop will be in one of the most beautiful markets of the Ecuadorian Hightlands with fruits, vegetables and in some cases animals, after this visit while you are going to cross the mountains of the central province of Cotopaxi and pass through the community of Zumbahua. You also can make a second stop and take pictures of the amazing landscape on the viewpoint of the Toachi River Canyon.Once in the Quilotoa Lagoon you can hike down along the road towards the shores of this beautiful place. After a free time to enjoy, you will take the way back to the viewpoint, you can do it walking or renting a mule (extra cost).After lunch (not included) within the community of Quilotoa, the return to Quito begins.
