Quilotoa Lagoon and Indian Markets in One Day from Quito

Quilotoa, an emerald colored lake located inside a volcano crater, is one of the Andes’ gems. At 3800m, the lake is also a host to surrounding indigenous communities. The drive to Quilotoa passes through the Zumbahua canyon and various indigenous towns and farmlands. Depending on the day, we will visit either the Saquisilí (Thursdays), or Pujilí (Sundays) indigenous markets so you can appreciate the contrast between these and those of the Imbabura province (Otavalo). We then arrive at the Quilotoa National Park and begin our descent to the lake, you can hike back up or rent a mule to take you back up. After lunch we will visit Shalala, a community well known for their handicrafts.  Weather in Quilotoa is very unpredictable, so we recommend being prepared with warm and waterproof clothing (layers always help). Overnight Tour to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa from Quito

Day 1: Cotopaxi (B,L)Begin at the meeting point in Quito, where you’ll board a vehicle destined for the Cotopaxi National Park. Absorb spectacular viewsof the Andean landscape and Avenida de los Volcanes.On arrival in the national park, you’ll hike to the summit of Cotopaxi Volcano, which forms part of the Pacific RIng of Fire.Depending on weather conditions, you’ll hike to the volcano’s 14,763-foot (4,500-meter) summit. After a safety briefing, you’ll commence a downhill descent on mountain bikes. There are two sections of the mountain biking, the first is recommend for experienced riders and the second for standard riders. The journey finishes at the beautiful lagoon at the base of Cotopaxi.The day concludes with drop-off at Hacienda Papagayo, where you will spend the night.Day 2: Quilotoa Lagoon (B,L)This full day cultural tour begins with a visit to a local indigenous market, “Saquisili” (Thursdays) or the “Pujili”market (Sundays). Then, you’ll travel to  Quilotoa Lagoon, an astonishing emerald colored lagoon inside a large volcano crater.Before reaching the crater's main point, you’ll pass through the ancient canyon of Zumbahua town, where you can see many indigenous towns and farmlands. Arriving inside the crater, you’ll appreciate the vast and gorgeous lagoon landscape.Before lunch, around 2 pm you will visit a local indigenous home where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with the inhabitants. Private Quilotoa Lagoon Tour from Quito

Quilotoa Information:The popularity of the Quilotoa is due to the beauty of its places and the spectacle of calm waters. In the community of Quilotoa, also known as the "Summit Route" and accessible by bus from the town of Zumbahua, visitors can do ecotourism and adventure tourism with a high dose of adrenaline or simply contemplate the nearby landscapes .Even this place is close to what many researchers assume as the last dwelling of the Inca Atahualpa, so this was the last sacred route of the Incas. Visiting Quilotoa is an amazing experience approximately 4 thousand meters above sea level.On a nice hike down to the lagoon of about 30 minutes we will reach the bank of the lagoon. The ascent back to the top takes more time, but you have the possibility to rent donkeys or horses down at the lagoon. On the top we will enjoy the beautiful countryside. The stunning landscapes are a must for photography lovers.Before heading back to Quito admire the emerald green lagoon! Quilotoa Lake full day from Quito

Early morning, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel to take you by mini Van or 4wd car to the Quilotoa lagoon. Depending on the day of the week, the first stop will be in one of the most beautiful markets of the Ecuadorian Hightlands with fruits, vegetables and in some cases animals, after this visit while you are going to cross the mountains of the central province of Cotopaxi and pass through the community of Zumbahua. You also can make a second stop and take pictures of the amazing landscape on the viewpoint of the Toachi River Canyon. Once in the Quilotoa Lagoon you can hike down along the road towards the shores of this beautiful place. After a free time to enjoy, you will take the way back to the viewpoint, you can do it walking or renting a mule (extra cost). After lunch (not included) within the community of Quilotoa, the return to Quito begins. On the way we will visit the community of Tigua where you can see and buy some paintings and masks done by the locals. Once in Quito your driver will drop off you at your hotel.

DAY 1 (D) In the morning you will be visiting the colonial old town of Quito. After you will be visit the equator monument called Mitad del Mundo.  DAY 2 (B,L) You will do a 5 hour hike through the flora of the Andean highlands to explore the Cuicocha Crater. Later, you will visit the famous Otavalo market. DAY 3 (B,L) The train ride will start in Otavalo and will take you to Salinas, where you can explore the culture and history of the Afro-Ecuadorians.  DAY 4 (B,D)You will go to thermal baths of Papallacta. In the afternoon, you will arrive at a cozy lodge middle in a private protected forest. DAY 5 (B,L,D)You will have a hike through the protected rainforest. An expert from Pacari will show you how they make chocolate from local cacao beans. DAY 6 (B,L,D) Early in the morning, you and your guide will hop on a canoe along the Arajuno river to a clay lick to observe hundreds of parrots and parakeets. Then you will drive to a small town in the jungle called Misahualli for a typical Almuerzo. DAY 7 (B,D) After your breakfast, you will drive to an Animal Rescue Center in Puyo to see some tropical animals of the Amazon and to meet monkeys face to face. From here you will head deeper into the rainforest to eventually end up in Macas. Here you can relax in the afternoon in a nice hosteria. DAY 8 (B,L,D) You will viist the Shuar waterfall, where you will try to perform the waterfall ceremony of the Shuar.  DAY 9 (B,L) In the early morning, you will visit the Andean market of Guamote. After the market, you will explore the area and the small villages to have a better insight into the life of the Kichwa community. In the afternoon, you will be heading to Riobamba. * Upgrade option: Train ride over the Devil’s Nose:  After visiting the Guamote market you also have the choice to drive to a small train station of Alausi and do the famous train ride. (+ $ 90 p.p.)DAY 10 (B,L) Today, you will be heading to Riobamba to visit the Chimborazo volcano (6267 m). You will have a stop on 3000-meter altitude to visit the indigenous Kichwa community. From here you are able to hike to the Whymper refuge that is over 5000 meter in altitude. Later in the afternoon, you will be heading to Latacunga. DAY 11 (B,L,D) After breakfast, you will have a short drive to the village of La Victoria. Later, you will continue to the Andean market of Zumbahua. Here you can experience the noisy and chaotic market before you’ll head to the Quilotoa lagoon.  DAY 12 (B,L) You will explore the Cotopaxi National Park. Afterwards, you will have a lunch in the mountain refuge called Tambopaxi surrounded with the Sincholagua and Cotopaxi volcanos before heading back to Quito.
