This cultural full day begins at 07h00, driving through the avenue of the volcanoes and with a visit to a local indigenous market at the Saquilisilí Village (Thursday). The drive to Quilotoa Lake displays a beautiful view of the Andean mountains, passing the ancient canyon of Toachi river, many indigenous communities and farmlands. Before lunch, in the location known as “Huayra Pungo”, we will visit a local indigenous home where you have the opportunity to interact with the inhabitants and maybe learn some Kichwa, the native language of the region. After this special experience, we have the chance to visit the local and unique market of Zumbahua (Saturday), where we are able to see the ancestral trading system of exchanging goods without any currency called trueque! The tour includes a steep hike down into the Quilotoa Lake, a sparkling emerald lake inside the extinct volcano crater, located at 3.600 meters above sea level. The way back to the top, where the parking area is, takes one hour, or there is an option of renting a mule or a horse with a comfortable settle for the way back. It is important to be well prepared for the high altitude, so we recommend to go through an acclimatization process a night before at least at 2.800 meters, it means, at the city of Quito. We will be back in Quito at around 17h00. After having enjoyed this unforgettable life experience!
