Located about 15km outside of Quito, this hidden gem is managed by the Jocotoco Foundation, which has 10 reserves around Ecuador. This one, crucially, is home to the black-breasted puffleg (Zamarrito pechinegro, named for its white legs which resemble traditional white-cuffed leather pants, or zamarro). There may only be 300 individuals left in the world – found only in Pichincha Province.
There's a ton of hummingbirds here and about 120 other species, such as the tree turkey, or guan. There's also a nice cafe where you can reserve lunch in advance. The closest village is Nono, about 10km outside Quito. From there you will see a sign for the reserve, but you can also arrange for Jocotoco to provide you with a guide and a ride.
