Getting There & Away

The Baños bus terminal is within easy walking distance of most hotels. Transportes Baños offers frequent buses direct to Quito ($4.45, 3½ hours). There are buses every 30 minutes to Salasaca ($0.50, 30 minutes) and Ambato ($1.10, one hour); take a Quito-bound bus for Latacunga ($2, 1½ hours). There are daily buses to Guayaquil ($9, seven hours).

The Baños–Riobamba road via Penipe has great views of the volcano along the way. There are six buses a day to Riobamba ($2, 1½ hours); change in Riobamba for buses to Cuenca, or if you miss a Guayaquil bus.

To the Oriente, buses depart regularly for Puyo ($2, two hours), Tena ($4, five hours), Coca ($10, 10 hours) and Macas ($7.50, four hours).

Getting Around

Westbound local buses leave from Rocafuerte, behind the Mercado Central. Marked ‘El Salado,’ they go to the Piscinas El Salado ($0.25, 10 minutes). Eastbound local buses go as far as the Pailón del Diablo ($0.50); they leave from Alfaro at Martínez.
