Sadly, homophobia is rampant in the Dominican Republic, and even in hip Santo Domingo it's rare to see same-sex couples holding hands or kissing in public. These sorts of behaviors may be frowned on and even provoke verbal abuse. That said, nearly all the hotels in the city are gay-friendly, and a number of clubs even cater to the gay community. Parque Duarte is known as an unofficial early-evening gathering spot for the young LGBT crowd, which eventually disperses to gay bars like Esedeku and G Lounge, which hosts drag shows. Cruising is definitely a thing, especially the bars, on the beaches, and along the Malécon.
