Welcome to Marstal
At Æro's eastern end, Marstal is larger and more workaday than Ærøskøbing but still has several charming, narrow streets descending gently from the old church. In its 1890s heyday, more than 300 merchant ships pulled into port annually and eight shipyards were operating. At time of writing, the last of these was due to close by the end of 2017, but the traditions are still celebrated in a superb maritime history museum. Meanwhile, on nearby Erikshale Strand, a much-photographed 1930s thatched beach hut has become an icon of Æro and, indeed, of the whole southern archipelago.
