The countryside north of Faaborg gets its tongue-in-cheek nickname, the ‘Funen Alps’, from rolling part-wooded hills. They're criss-crossed with cycling and walking trails. Perhaps ride around the bay to Helnæs past the picturesque jetties of Brunhuse, crossing a pretty causeway and spying a unique thatched windmill.

Archaeological snorkelling trips can be arranged to visit areas just off the Faaborg coastline considered to have been the sites of Stone Age settlements before being flooded around 9000 years ago. Don't expect dramatic ruins. However, it's just possible that you'll find an old flint tool amid the shallow-water weeds. Check for details.
