Třeboň is the place to try Czech freshwater fish dishes, notably carp from the local fish ponds – Třeboňský kapr (Třeboň carp) has been awarded the EU's PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status. Carp is a traditional family Christmas dish, but it is eaten year-round in the form of kapří hranolky (carp chips), strips of fish dipped in batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy.
