If you’re looking for somewhere inexpensive but not far from the city centre, then Žižkov and Karlín are your best bet. The slightly run-down air of these districts puts a lot of people off, but they are as safe as anywhere else in the city and only a couple of tram stops from Staré Město. Some of the accommodation here can be mediocre, but things are improving all the time – Žižkov has some of Prague's best hostels, and we'd be surprised if Karlín doesn't sprout some cool designer hotels in the next few years.
