Welcome to Lapta (Lapithos)
Lapta was one of the original city-kingdoms of Cyprus and a regional capital under Roman rule. Its abundant water supply and protected position have made it a favourite choice of foreign rulers and settlers for centuries.
A mixed village pre-1974, Lapta accommodated Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in harmony, until the skirmishes of the 1960s saw a mosque’s bell tower spoiled in the wake of local differences. In the mid-1990s, forest fires devastated much of the region but fortunately missed this town. Today the village population is a blend of Europeans, mainland Turks and Turkish Cypriots.
