Hotel Colony

Hotel in South of Nueva Gerona

Looking more like a hospital than a hotel from the outside, the Colony, 46km southwest of Nueva Gerona, originated in 1958 as part of the Hilton chain, but was confiscated by the revolutionary government. Today the complex has a mix of dull out-of-fashion rooms and large, bright newer bungalows. The clientele is split between foreign divers and Cubans belting out recorded music.

The water off the hotel's white-sand beach is shallow, with sea urchins littering the bottom. Take care if you decide to swim. A safer bet is the Colony's noisy pool. A long wharf stretches out hopefully into the Caribbean, though it's half-ruined these days. Snorkeling in the immediate vicinity of the hotel is mediocre, but the sunsets are to die for.
