Welcome to Varaždinske Toplice
Sulphurous thermal springs at a steaming temperature of 58°C have been attracting weary visitors to Varaždinske Toplice since the Romans first established a health settlement here in the 1st century AD. Today it's still a relaxed and quiet spa-town, surrounded by gentle, wooded hills and with a central clutch of churches and historic buildings including the baroque castle (now the town's museum). Most people are here for the thermal pools, part of an unfortunately ugly hospital-hotel complex, but if you're passing through and interested in history, a quick stroll through the remains of the Roman Spa, built between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, is worthwhile.
