Pag Island by Dinko Srkoč

Croatia's best islands

Pag Island by Dinko Srkoč Creative Commons Attribution

Croatia’s coast is speckled with a multitude of magnificent islands. There’s an enormous variety both in size and character – some are verdant, others arid, some are deserted (indeed, some ban overnight stays), while others host historic towns or buzzing resorts. We’ve chosen a selection of the biggest and best, but don’t neglect the smaller islands, some of which can be reached from the destinations we’ve mentioned here. Some of the nearer islands are connected to the mainland by bridges, and the rest can be reached by Croatia’s decent ferry network – the trip over the Adriatic, gazing at white cliffs and green hills over the sparkling water can be a wonderful experience in itself.

Destination

Hvar Island

Long, lean Hvar is vaguely shaped like the profile of a holidaymaker reclining on a sun lounger, which is altogether appropriate for the sunniest spot in the country (2724 sunny hours each year) and its most luxurious beach destination.

Destination

Mljet Island

Mljet is one of the most seductive of all the Adriatic islands. Much of the island is covered by forests and the rest is dotted with fields, vineyards and small villages. The western tip contains Mljet National Park, where the lush vegetation, pine forests and spectacular saltwater lakes are exceptionally scenic.

Vis Island

Of all the Croatian islands, Vis is the most mysterious – even to locals. The furthest of the main Central Dalmatian islands from the coast, Vis spent much of its recent history serving as a military base for the Yugoslav army, cut off from foreign visitors from the 1950s right up until 1989.

Destination

Korčula Island

Rich in vineyards, olive groves and small villages, and harbouring a glorious old town, the island of Korčula is the sixth-largest Adriatic island, stretching nearly 47km in length. Dense woods led the original Greek settlers to call the island Korkyra Melaina (Black Korčula).

Destination

Cres Island

Cres has a wild, natural allure that’s intoxicating and inspiring. Sparsely populated, it’s covered in dense primeval forests, and boasts a craggy coastline of soaring cliffs, hidden coves and ancient hilltop towns.

Destination

Brač Island

Brač is famous for two things: its radiant white stone, used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the White House in Washington, DC (oh, yes!), and Zlatni Rat, the long pebbly beach at Bol that extends lasciviously into the Adriatic and adorns 90% of Croatia’s tourism posters.

Destination

Krk Island

Croatia’s largest island, connected to the mainland by a toll bridge, Krk (Veglia in Italian) is also one of the busiest – in summer, hundreds of thousands of central Europeans stream to its holiday houses, campsites and hotels. It’s not the lushest or most beautiful island, though its landscape is quite varied, ranging from forests in the west to sunburned ridges in the east.

Destination

Brijuni Islands

The Brijuni (Brioni in Italian) archipelago consists of two main pine-covered islands and 12 islets off the coast of Istria, just northwest of Pula across the 3km-wide Fažana Channel. Only the largest island, Veli Brijun, can be visited, usually on an organised trip.

Destination

Pag Island

Pag is like something you’d find in a 1950s Italian film, perfect for a broody black-and-white Antonioni set – it’s barren, rocky, and sepia coloured, with vast empty landscapes. The Adriatic is a steely blue around it and, when the sky is stormy, the island is the most dramatic-looking place in the whole of Croatia.
