Inland Croatia's best sleeping options are the family-run guesthouses, inns, B&Bs and rural cottages that pepper the countryside. The bigger towns of Osijek and Varaždin are the only places where you'll find a larger range of accommodation.
In contrast with the Italian-style food along Croatia's coast, inland Croatia offers heartier fare, starring meat and starch. In Slavonia, regional cuisine is strongly influenced by neighbouring Hungary, so expect generous paprika sprinklings and lots of fish and game-meat dishes. Zagorje is known for specialities like purica s mlincima (slow-roasted turkey with baked noodles) and štrukli (baked cheese dumplings).
