On the advice of mrmoto, rather than travelling away from Liberia after our cheap charter flight to do a standard kind of intinerary which would be better started from San Jose we had a lovely 12 night trip in Guancaste in late April. We hired a car and travelled to Miravalles area (hot springs), Rincon de la Vieja, Bijagua (including boat trip at Cano Negro), Rio Celeste park, Nuevo Arenal (western end of the lake), Playa Junquillai (small turtle release project) and Playa Hermosa. We saw…

If you look at the internet car hire in Costa Rica seems a bit tricky. This is around collision damage waiver. In short there is compulsory government CDW which is either in your quote or added to it but it is mandatory. Rental agencies will try to make you buy additional CDW cover to the extent of potentially not letting you take the car without it. We asked about this on the forum and the answer for Americans is that their credit cards usually include this extra cover. For non Americans…

I would love to visit in latter part of June early July during the rainy season and going to Monte Verda Rain Forest and Manuel Antonia area. However need to know % of humidity in air since I have a problem with that :ie living in Washington DC had to take salt tablets and was told shouldn't live there.
Would appreciate some feedback
thanks

Hi all! I’m planning to do a two week backpacking trip in Costa Rica. Please flood me with all of your advice!! I am curious what the atmosphere is like socially in Costa Rica- will I have trouble meeting other backpackers? I’m planning on traveling alone (23 yo woman) and want to be sure it won’t be too hard to meet other people. I traveled for a few months in Asia and it wasn’t a problem- just wondering if it will be similar in Costa Rica. Thanks!

Going to Costa Rica for ten days in late July with the girlfriend. Could use some help with suggestions to make this trip less.... basic.

Fly into San Jose
Rent a car
Spend a day or two in the forest and hot springs around Arenal
Spend about a week in Nosara surfing
Drive back toward San Jose, stopping for a night in Monteverde
Fly out of San Jose

30 y/o americans. moderate budget, only very basic Spanish, would prefer to stay away from huge crowds.

We are considering flying into Liberia (since…

My family and I are currently in Punta Uva and and want to head to Tortuguero on Thursday for three nights before heading back to San Jose. I'm having trouble figuring out how to navigate this since it's remote and most of what I see is part of a package. We'd like to do it as cheap as possible, does it make sense to do everything independently (what I usually do) or, by the time I've booked all the transportation, guides etc, will it be more expensive? I've heard you can take a boat from…

Okay, so I'm currently in Guatemala and I've suddenly convinced myself that I need to see tapirs and toucans. And sloths, obviously. I got in touch with Ficus Tours and they say I can join another group for a 2-day trek of Corcovado (from Carate and back) at the end of May. It's $235 pp, all expenses included. This company is well-reviewed, from what I can see.

The thing is, I'm currently travelling all over the working from my laptop (yeah that digital nomad thing) so I have the bare minimum…

Planning on taking the bus from San Jose to Managua

Roughly how much do they cost/take - am guessing border crossing must be slow with lots of people

Is it worth buying tickets in advance or on the day of travel?

I am impressed by the feedback on this forum, so I'd like to ask for advice. My family of 4 (2 daughters, 11, 12) will be spending 8 days in Costa Rica, with most of that time at a house in Nosara, in the August 18-26th time frame. While exploring the Nosara/Ostional region and enjoying the relaxing beach life will be a focus for 5-6 days, I'd like to see a little more of the country before leaving. We are open to flying into LIR and departing form SJO (or vice versa), or even flying in and…
