Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

Greetings!
I am planning to enter the country from Mongolia with a local driver / taxi /bus and leave it similar way towards Vietnam. How to do it with visa? How can I "reserve" the flights? Can I do so and later follow my plan? Will they stop me at the border saying I am supposed to enter and leave in a plane?

I’ll be traveling to China for the first time. I actually have to go there for a conference in Shanghai, which is why I’m flying in to Shanghai and have to go back there after a few days. I managed to fly out of Hong Kong because I wanted to see Hong Kong as well (never been there either).

So how do you suggest to fill the following days:

Day 1: Arrive in Shanghai in the afternoon
Day 2-6: ??? (back to Shanghai in the evening)
Day 7-9: Shanghai for business
Day 10-14: ???
Day 15: Fly out of Hong…

One of the most common questions I receive about VPNs (or “Virtual Private Network”) is this: Is it legal to use a VPN in China? Since China censors the internet using the “Great Firewall of China” to keep people inside the country from accessing different websites like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Gmail, etc., it’s no wonder that some of the best VPNs are most popular in China.

The question isn’t popularity, though, it’s legality. Is it illegal to use a VPN in China? Let’s discuss this a little…

Hi, does anybody have fresh information about Hotan and the rest of the southern road across Xinjiang? I'm surprised to see only posts from last year and before about this.

Hi,

I'm looking for tips on interesting things to see in and around Chongqing, and good places to visit. As always, I'm interested in genuine historic sites, and perhaps some authentic old towns or nice riverside locations.

Is anyone familiar with Chongqing, and has some tips? What are good day-trips out of the city?

Many thanks!

I will be travelling around China with my partner in the summer and wondered how easy or difficult it is for native English speakers (with no Chinese language knowledge) to travel around areas such as Guilin, Yangshou and Zhangjiajie please?
The plan is to use public transport to get around and trains or internal flights to get between cities. I have visited Beijing, Shanghai and Xian before and managed to get around, however I understand these are far more international than the places above.

I'm having a heck of a time finding a way to book lodging in Dehang... Most folks posting either in forums or on their own blogs say they just "show up" and there are rooms available. But since I'm traveling in July with a family of 4, that seems like courting disaster.

Does anyone have a bead on how to book lodging in Dehang ahead of time, so I can feel confident we'll show up and have a place to sleep?

Hi there. Looking to take advantage of the three day weekend in June (15-18) and found good flights to/from Hailar. Does anyone have recent experience visiting northern Inner Mongolia? If we're interested in a horsebackriding trek in the grasslands and possibly camping/homestays in the area for the long weekend, any recommendations? Info on this region seems sparse and outdated.

thanks!
