Welcome to Shegar
The last main stop on the way to Everest is the wind-raked truck stop of Shegar (འབར།; 协格尔; Xiégé'ěr; also known as New Tingri, not to be confused with Tingri), located at Km5133, about 12km before the turn-off to Everest. By the time many travellers arrive from Shigatse, it’s already too late to visit Everest, so most spend the night here, heading off to catch the early morning Himalayan views from Pang-la pass en route to Everest. If you have a couple of hours, you can make a short side trip into Shegar's old town a few kilometres west of the hotel-restaurant strip to check out the incredible ruins of Shegar Dzong.
You'll also sometimes hear this place referred to by its historic name, Baber (དབལ་; 白坝; Báibà).
